Why Do Trading Cards Warp? How to Keep Your Cards Flat
Your Pokémon cards or other trading cards may start curling even when you haven't touched them. Changes in humidity and storage conditions can cause this problem. Here's how to help prevent your favorite cards from warping.
Why Do Trading Cards Warp on Their Own?
Many trading cards are made from multiple layers of paper, sometimes combined with foil or other coatings. When humidity changes, these materials can expand or contract at different rates, gradually causing the card to curl. Holo and foil cards can be especially prone to this, even when they've been sitting untouched in storage.
How Can You Prevent Cards from Warping?

1. Use protective sleeves Choose sleeves designed for trading cards, such as acid-free, PVC-free polypropylene (PP) sleeves. They help protect the card surface from scratches and direct contact. 2. Use toploaders or card binders For cards that need extra protection, place them in a sleeve first, then insert them into a toploader to help keep them flat. For larger collections, a card binder with properly sized pockets is a practical option. Avoid pockets that are so tight you have to force the cards inside. 3. Watch humidity and temperature Store your cards somewhere with relatively stable temperature and humidity. Avoid direct sunlight, damp walls, and areas that become excessively hot. If you use desiccants inside storage boxes, avoid making the environment too dry. Sudden or extreme humidity changes can also cause cards to warp.
What If Your Cards Are Already Warped?
If a card is only slightly curled, try placing it in a suitable sleeve and toploader, then keeping it in an environment with stable humidity. Some cards may gradually relax over time. Avoid using an iron, hair dryer, or heavy weights to flatten cards. These methods can permanently damage the surface or foil layer. For rare or valuable cards, it's better not to experiment with straightening methods yourself.
